2 Nits.
1) I think it is better to move the comment in lines 746-748 closer to
where
the code that actually needs modifying in the future. Perhaps before
line 770?
2) line 779: instead of a debugging message which won't show up in the
log in
the normal cases. Perhaps log a warning message?
