Here's a good place to start (as always), the Wikipedia article. That  
might give you an idea of the terminology and at least allow you to  
make smarter google searches to find out more:

I used to be a big Smarty user, but I realized that its just as easy  
for me to say "Don't touch anything inside of <?php ?> " as it is to  
do so with curly braces. But, to each his own.
