As far as "get involved"

I've always gotten the feeling that if I modified the code to cake
that it would not get acepted. So I never bothered. I've seen some
people write wonderful patches and additions, only to see them get
rejected. Right now I've been doing a lot in pagination and there are
several things I could easily fix or improve. The question is would my
changes be taken into the core Cake trunk? How do I just add some code
or fix something broken in cake without having to file an "enhancement
request" and just pray that one day it might maybe get added in?

Also I've long ago given up hopes on good docs. Now my only problems
are this "does it behave the way they wanted it to?". Because
sometimes I just don't know. Does it work they way gwoo, nate, phpnut,
etc want it to or is it a bug?
