If you're planning to use fondant, you might want to try to browse through
this book:

#reader-page. Keep clicking until you reach the last page. It's got a
picture of mice in a pumpkin, but it's very similar to your concept.

Personally, I think decorating with fondant is a lot trickier than
decorating with frosting and if you have no experience, you may have a
difficult time. But you still have a lot of time to practice!

 Have you looked through wilton.com for ideas? I'm sure there's lots there.
