Different people have different memorization and coping skills and strategies. One can be a perfectly good caller without memorizing the swing/circle/swing/other stuff of generic contras.
But if you don't go the memorization route, it's smart to stash a dozen or three written dances in various emergency locations -- car, pocketbook, wallet, home dance hall, or such.
