At the meantime the world was deeply engaged a cold war.The "tiny shitty country Cambodia" as President Nixon had called was under tremendous pressure from all sides of the conflicts .He attempted to maintain his kingdom to be free from the war. As you know on the East, South Vietnam under Diem regime was so arrogant to the king, by plotting coup against him, and the West Bangkok military regime of Sarit-Thanat Khoman and Thnom Kattikachorn were harbouring Khmer Serei insurgencies against him . The former king chose China to be his best friend forever based on proximity and non-inteference policy . Since the world, especially USA, USSR and China were at peak of cold war, the Vietnam war was played out as main focal point of conflicts . Defending the freedom and spreading communism were the policies of the superpowers,in fact Vietnam had their own intention and agenda, nationalism was a cause of struggle, Vietnam must be united . It was to bad, the kingdom of Cambodia had no good Amarts ( Manderins ) like the next door kingdom . All his Amarts who were sworn in front of Khmer ancestors turned to be his betrayers for example the 70's coup d'etat . Most of Khmer Republic leaders had no clue what they were doing, and they had no clue about American policy when they were abandoned, the consequence was catastrophic. On the other side KR was ignorant about China policy, Ieng Sary thought when Vietnamese troups came to Cambodia, China would send their massive troups to defend his regime, but miscalculated. Good and bad time, China always be there to support former king without China, the royal family would be vanished without a trace like Lao royal family . Today, the former king is retiring let him enjoy his last life and let history be the judge.
