https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uD4_seFRYf8&feature=youtu.be *«*កុម្មុយនិស្តមុនក្រោយគឺដូចគ្នា» Hundreds of thousands of Cambodians had experienced life in different Chumrom (refugee camp) at the Khmer-Thai border following the Khmer Rouge takeover of Cambodia in 1975 and during Vietnam’s invasion in 1978. Tens of thousands had volunteered their services in the Khmer national resistance. >From nothing, they created a liberation movement. India’s great spiritual and political leader Mahatma Gandhi once said, “Strength does not come from physical capacity. It comes from an indomitable will,” and “A small body of determined spirits fired by an unquenchable faith in their mission can alter the course of history.” Several former colleagues in the Khmer People’s National Liberation Armed Forces have been kind to share their precious photos with me. They authorized me to post their photos. At this year’s end I am pleased to present a PowerPoint based on their photos, and some I took in 1980-1989. I pulled refrains «កុម្មុយនិស្តមុនក្រោយគឺដូចគ្នា», or “Communists before or after are the same” from a popular liberation song called «មើលមេឃ» or “Look at the Sky,” and used the refrains as the title of this PowerPoint. The first half is accompanied by a popular sentimental Khmer oldie called « ប្រុសកំពូលស្នេហ៏» or “Top Love Man,” sung by Ms. Ros Sereysothea. The images and words in the songs should touch many Cambodians’ feelings and hearts as they anticipate the New Year 2016. As I mentioned before, the photos also are a depiction of the sacrifices those of my generation endured that contributed to the signing of the 1991 Paris Peace Agreements. That episode of history should not and must not be forgotten. As is always the case when we take the time to reflect, the past explains the present and is a guide for the future. In the words of the 26th President of the United States, from 1901 to 1909, “It behooves every man to remember that the work of the critic is of altogether secondary importance, and that, in the end, progress is accomplished by the man who does things.” I dedicate this PowerPoint to all those who have served in the Cambodian Noncommunist Resistance, in which I also was privileged to participate for 9 years.
