Part of the problem is that so far no one has actually said what the intended
application of the lens *is*. I am assuming that it is for a slit panoramic camera
because several of the other posts suggest this application, but no one has said
explicitly.

"Covers medium format" is too general a term, 6x4.5 is medium format, so is 6x12 a lot
of 35mm lenses will cover the width of 120 film the coverage after that varies a lot.
The general feeling that I have is that for non slit applications 35mm SLR lenses are
none starters because

1) Their coverage and sharpness at frame corners is likely to be suspect even for 6x6.
2) You still have to arrange a usable shutter and homebrewing something effective in
the short distance between lens and film plane is likely to be a challenge.

For slit applications the aim would be to get a good quality lens in an unpopular
mount which is why I suggested the Konica. The problem with Nikors is that every day
more cameras are sold that can use those lenses and so the relative cost of the used
optic is high. By contrast with the Konica and Canon MF lenses each day the number of
cameras taking those lenses decreases as 10 and 15 year old bodies finally give up the
ghost. Consequently good optics can be bought for little money. (Technical note here,
lens flange to filmplane distances for Konica is less than for Nikon, meaning that a
Konica could use any Nikor via a mount adapter and still focus the lens at infinity.
Unfortunately it meant that I couldnt use the Konica lenses on my Nikon when my Konica
body died.)
