My camera uses rack and gear for rise and fall of the lens (helical focusing; some day I'll get pics of it on the web!). I bought 3' of rack and 2 matching gears from a local boston gear distributor for about $50 total. I never could find a stem pinion with a long enough stem, or wire pinion with round ends to attach the knobs, so I just put two gears on a 1/4" shaft.
