Sandy,

What i do is go to Home Dept buy a 3/8" Nut insert. You can also go the 
the wood section and find 1/4" oak. It comes in many widths and lengths. 
Pretty cheap. You can even cut it their with their hand miter box. The 
wood is finished both sides.

All you will need is a drill bit the next size larger. You put the nut 
"thing" in then lightly tap the prongs in.

I have build many pinhole cameras with this technique.
