Gene, The combination I remember better was ADOX KB-14 and Willi Beutler's Neofin Blue developer from the 1950's. KB-14 (R-14 in roll film sizes) was a slow, very contrasty film. It could be coaxed into yielding a reasonable gray scale with the use of Neofin Blue developer. I preferred KB-17 in Neofin Blue since it gave a longer gray scale and a speed of ASA 40 (instead of 20 with KB-14). I think the formula for Neofin Blue is available somewhere on the Internet if you search for it with Google or the like...RKS
