Jeff You need to determine whether it has been finished with Varnish Lacquer, or Shellac
My Kodak 2D was finished in shellac. When I refinished it I cleaned up the wood, mixed a fresh batch of shellac, and added 3 coats, then a coating of wax. I believe I can provide some tests to determine if the finish is Lacquer or Shellac. If it is a varnish, it is harder to tell what type... Of course, someone or literature may tell what was used for a finish.
