The HIG itself is indeed a guideline, not an edict. Says so right in the title. But that means the HIG cannot be used to pass the buck on a programming decision, which is what S. Woodside did. "The HIG says to do X, therefore we do X." Disregarding for the moment that the HIG doesn't say Woodside's X at all, the attitude evinced by this kind of invocation of the HIG begs the question of why any Apple nonemployee would even bother writing an application for OSX.
