I have been using FB for a few months. yes, the search field is pretty cool. I got very excited initially, set up search site favicon, etc.

but , in fact, 90% of my time is actually doing this:
-set the home URL to www.google.com
-press short cut key to home page
-then start to search, press enter
* zero mouse click. the faster way I can find.

yes, I wish there is a keyboard shortcut to focus on this search field in FB . that will be very cool!

I'll take a look at fb's approach, but this is a slippery slope, akin to "what can just one more pref hurt?" For the people that want to customize it, a mechanism is provided. For people that do not, the UI isn't cluttered.

I've played for one night with FB way of handling the search field and it's impressive.
It's easy and it doesn't clutter UI: just a sheet to ask for the installation of the plug-in. No prefs. The presence of the search site favicon also helps.
The search plug-in API could be borrowed, so we could get for free the existing plugins.

Ciao.
