Hello:

The problem with lagging response in TextAreas has been an on going
one. The issue is complicated and has something to do with Camino's
mixed heritage. Its Frontened is cocoas but its rendering engine is
mozilla's.

> Mmmmm :)

Yes, I believe that the developers (I'm not one of them) would like to
use cocoa here because it would also give camino access to OS X 's
spell checker.

A while back there was a continuing issue with some websites (yahoo
was one of them) initiating complete crash of Camino. It was traced
back to something in cocoa and the work around for it was to go back
to using QuickDraw to render. I'm not sure where we stand with running
Quartz instead of QuickDraw.

It doesn't end there though. There is a suspicsion also that running
animations anywhere (even ones hidden behind another window or in a
hidden tab) are causing part of this problem. I think those animations
continue to run even while not visible.

The question also arises whether the problem has anything at all to do
with Camino code at all. Is it something in the OS itself,? That would
make it an Apple problem.

I have noticed another thing. The problem is definitely worse the
longer the browser has been open. Is that because the longer the
browser is open the more pages the user has open? Closing pages that
are not in use and hidden seems to help, but not completely alleviates
the problem.

I have been wanting to bring this up again, but I can't find a
situation which I can reproduce. So i have been watching for a set of
circumstances in which I can guarantee that this problem will occur.
That would give the developers a chance to figure out what was going
on.

As I said above, these are prime suspects. This has also brought up
the possibility of looking for a way to disable flash animations while
they are hidden (some have even suggested that Flash no longer be
supported in web browsers). I think animated gif's do not run while
not visible. Flash runs continually I believe (someone correct me if
I"m wrong
)

Yes, this is also under consideration.

I am typing this at the present moment in the textarea and having no
problems. but I have nothing else running except TextEdit. I and I
just woke my iBook from sleep and continued with reading email after
being away from the computer for several hours. Only one other tab is
open to a page contains only on still image and some text. It seems
far easier to come up with scenarios in which i have not problems
with working in textareas than it is to find scenarios where the text
area is reproducible. How do you file a bug for something like this?

One other questions for thte list. I'm still running Panther, so I
don't know if this problem is still present in Tiger. Has anyone
running Tiger had this problem? Or is it now only a pre-Tiger problem.

As I type this I notice anohter small coosmetic thing with textareas
in Gmail specifically, I have multiple scross bare on my texterea
while I type a replay. Resizing the window doesn't make it go away.
Resizing the window only makes teh malformed vertical scroll bar
protude down to the edge of the open window. Anyone else seen this
problem?

This problem is the only one that keeps me from saying that Camino is
THE best Mac OS X brower hands down.
