there is a non-trivial amount of work to hook them up to javascript, get all the DOM events hooked up, get them bridged to CSS styling, etc etc etc. Then there's the speed issues with native widgets I hear hyatt bitching about every time we go to Denny's.

It would also be harder to get midas working as we'd have to do a lot with mucking with attributed strings for styles. We'd lose all the work done in the mozilla world. I'm not even sure how far midas goes. For example, can you create a bulleted list? The text area just can't do that, even in Mail.app on tiger.
