While having checksums could certainly be useful for people already aware of the idea of checksumming and validation, there is almost no chance it would do anything to educate the general public about it. 99.9% of users would simply ignore a checksum on the page, having absolutely no idea what it was or what it was for. Even if there were a link to explanation and instructions, you'd lose the vast majority of them at "Terminal", and possibly scare some people off the download.
Not an argument against having checksums posted; I just think it's best to be realistic about the benefits of including them.
