** TOP STORIES ** HURRICANE 2004: As Hurricane Ivan chugs along near Cuba, Southwest Floridians were warned Sunday that their weekend-long string of blue sky weather could turn into a soggy mess by Tuesday. But with a path taking the hurricane 240 miles from the area, the worst of Ivan's weather wrath might not surface. "We're breathing a little sigh of relief," said Collier County Emergency Management Director Dan Summers, who was keeping a still wary eye on Ivan's trek. "But that could be a temporary situation." HURRICANE 2004: Plywood lost its popularity Sunday. But there's not been a run yet on dairy products and frozen food. The stocked bread aisles and availability of gasoline Sunday were an indication that Southwest Florida residents have taken a sigh of relief. But the plywood boards and shuttered windows are still up. Area residents and businesses haven't forgotten about Hurricane Ivan. MICHAEL PELTIER: Hurricane Ivan may or not make landfall in Southwest Florida, but the killer storm and others are posing questions for lawmakers who may not be able to wait until March to come up with answers. Gov. Jeb Bush last week said it was likely lawmakers would return to Tallahassee shortly after the November elections. They will have a couple pressing issues to address: How to cushion the financial one-two-three punch of hurricanes Charley, Frances and Ivan and how to address the long-term housing needs of citizens. NEW LEADER: Immokalee educator Manny Touron walked across the street this school year to face a new challenge. As the new Immokalee High principal, he will try to boost student academic performance as he did at Immokalee Middle. "Sometimes there simply needs to be a change, a new way of doing things," former Superintendent Ben Marlin said about Touron's appointment. ** PERSPECTIVE ** EDITORIAL: City sidewalks, city sidewalks. But they're not dressed up in holiday style this time, as Old Naples residents and city politicians grope for direction on whether to expand the sidewalk network. Balance is sought between safety for pedestrians and motorists on roads such as Gulf Shore Boulevard, while heeding the wishes of residents who do not relish pedestrians coming through their front yards. Three more are expected after that. But that's just a ripple on the flexing muscles of the national up-and-coming giant whose vice president, Matt Andrew, and local franchise owner Mike Silverman, both graduated from Naples High.
