I believe it may be cultural. Some languages are very "polite" . In my native language, for example, a sentence must always end with a word or phrase which shows respect to the one spoken to if that person is older or in a higher position. I guess the over-politeness doesn't translate well into American English.
And yes, Mooch from Americans 101 is taught in our schools.![]()
