Does that mean that they were 10 when it took place, and were 18 in 2001? Did they ever actually serve any type of sentence?
I also thought of a few other things... like how is it that no one ever stopped the group who had time to walk two miles? Also where were the parents of the 10 year olds? How is it that they were unsupervised at a mall and for a few mile walk? The entire story is going to keep me with nightmares for quite some time.
As for petitions even if it were to do any good only those in the judges constituency would make a difference.
The entire story is retched and a travesty  ... frankly I would not want either of them at University with one of my children - let alone let loose on society. Quite honestly they should have been given life in prison. At the very least their current photos should be plastered in all public places where children might be. It seems on common sense that the public should have the chance to be aware.
There... I had to get it out. People think I am too protective a parent... I beg to differ and this is a great example of it. I only wish the story had been a prank.

I don't mean to be rude, (I'm sure you are sharing it with best of intentions!) but I usually find it a good idea to check this sort of info out before passing it on.

I searched on www.snopes.com and this is a portion on what I found:

"All this is true. And horrifying. Yet even so, there's no point in signing the petition or urging others to. Beyond all the usual arguments against the value of e-petitions (see our page about the worthlessness of e-petitions <http://www.snopes.com/inboxer/petition/internet.htm>,) one issue specific to this case rules against the utility of such a plan.
The strongest argument against this e-petition is that the situation being decried is already a done deal. On 8 January 2001, the High Court of England guaranteed both Venables and Thompson lifelong anonymity plus an unprecedented open-ended injunction barring any publicity about them. Each of these young men were released in June 2001 when they were 18."

Again, I'm not trying to be mean!!!!!

I just know that if it were me I'd want to know.
