I don't think the Davis light is a legal anchor light. Davis calls it
a courtesy light for that reason. I have one and use it, sometimes as
a cockpit light and also sometimes as an anchor light. When I was in
the Bahamas I seem to recall using it. Way better than using nothing,
which frankly I saw way too often there.
But I also have one of the anchor lights which use one of those big 9
volt batteries in a waterproof case, made by Guest. There are other
brands. Don't know if it's "legal" or not either, but it's definitely
brighter than the Davis. Shuts off automatically when it's daylight
too. That big battery lasts a long time. And heavy enough not to
swing too badly in the breeze.
Not even sure what "legal" means anyway. In the States, most people
consider legal means Coast Guard Approved. The legal requirement
(COLREGs) for most boats is 2 nautical mile visibility for an anchor
light. But if your light isn't Coast Guard Approved, how do you prove
your light is legal? Turn the light on and rent a bus and drive the
jury 2 nautical miles away?
The Davis literature says "up to 2 NM", that sounds like Marketing-
ese for less than 2NM to me. I've never seen any hard data which
shows the Davis meets the requirement. They are not Coast Guard
approved. They used to have a "double brightness" light, but I
haven't seen that for a while.
The Davis utility light is popular because of it's low current draw
and low cost. It's a great light and I use it if my Guest anchor
battery gets low, and it's a million times better than not putting
out an anchor light because of power draw concerns.
