Hi Art,

Sorry delayed answer - that was a lame attempt at a joke. I didn't pay much
for the woodblock prints (attested to be genuine by the old shop keeper) but
would guess that a complete set would be rather expensive. They were
printed on a heavy paper but I wouldn't call it cardboard. The colors were
a bit faded in spots but in general a pretty good set.

I also brought back a fair amount of what I believe was Edo era Japanese
coins. Some gold, some silver and some in other metals. Also a few little
ingots with chop marks. Can you recommend a good book on Japanese coins of
that era?

Thanks

Jan

Hi Jan,
First let me say that I have no idea what you are referring to
when you say "In trade I will let you have the pick of my 2000-2004
Lincoln set".

Second, yes I am very familiar with Hiroshige's 53 Stages of Tokaido.

Look in the Photos section under my folder (abalforu) and you will
see the first three stages (Nihonbashi, Shinagawa and Kawasaki) of
the "Hanga" version with English text versions which were made by
some Japanese for the foreigners (Gaijins) here.

Now did you originally buy actual Woodblock carving plates of the 53
stages and if so, what size (width, height and thickness of the
wood) were they. Also if they were on wood blocks, was the carving
in black "sumi" ink or done in color.

Now if they were not on wood blocks, were they on cardboard or paper?

Based on the answers you give, I can check further on availibility
and price.

Also to let you know that I was born in Higashi-Ginza, two blocks
behind the "Kabuki" theatre. We sold the property in 1985 during the
peak of the economic bubble and made a killing on it. Of course the
real reason is that we could not afford the high taxes any longer
and were forced to sell.

Were you in Japan during the Vietnam era? What years were you here?

I assume you were here on R&R from 'nam.

I might have seen you around in one of the Discos in Akasaka or
Roppongi, since those were my hangouts during those years until the
U.S. Army sent me a postcard. I joined the Navy the same day and was
in boot camp the next day.

P.S. For all other users, this is a bit off-topic but please bear
with us for a short while since Jan has mentioned something about
Lincoln Cents or something, which ARE coins, right?
