I doubt it is a profit center so much as the fact that it is expensive to
publish a small number of books. Depending on what type of binding and such
that price may just cover cost. My 2002 Corvette manuals were $125 and that
is on thin inexpensive binding and they print up a lot more than Lotus does.
On the other hand if the CD is available to dealers you may be able to
purchase the CD at a much lower cost.
If it makes you feel better, from what I have heard the manuals for a
Porsche are about 10 times that. I think in the case of the germans it is a
ploy to get you to pay the dealer to do the work, but it really annoys the
autocrossers who compete nationally in SCCA since they need to have a manual
with them in case they are protested.
