>>Any recommendations on trailor hitches and trailors? I drive a 1988
Mercury Cougar with enough oomph to pull anything. But I think I heard
that Trailor hitches come in Classes?
How much weight will I be pulling with an 18?

John,
Welcome back to the fold. I just got back into it, too, after a long hiatus.
My recent experience with trailer hitches was that the Class 2 and Class 3 cost
within 15% of each other, so I got the Class 3 heavier duty hitch. I got the
4-pin flat electrical connector and 1-7/8" ball because they seemed to fit all
the trailers that came with the used boats I looked at. The ball appears easy
to swap out and a new one at Walmart costs about $12. BTW, the guy that put
the hitch on for me told me to be sure to remove the bar with the ball when not
trailering, so it does not get stolen.

I put the hitch on a small Mazda minivan and pull my H16 with little effort.
There are lots of theories about center of gravity, tramp angle and tongue
weight, but I just go with the default way my trailer came and try to line up
the tramp posts with the trailer cradles in a general way. I think an H16
weighs about 320# and H18 is maybe about 100# more. The trailer weight
probably depends on steel or aluminum and features, but I'd guess mine weighs
150#? A total of 500# is very little - my minivan's owners manual says it can
pull something like 3500# as is, and I've got the smallest minivan on the
market, I think. I got the H16 partly because I can muscle it around the beach
on cat wheels by myself. I don't think I could do that with a bigger boat, but
then sometimes I wish I had a bigger boat when the waves are up. I didn't need
a tilting trailer or anything fancy because I keep the boat on the beach most
of the summer, so I don't know much about that. I did like the
  crank
winch last month when I pulled the boat onto the trailer from the cat wheels.
Hope that helps.
