If you can describe the noises it might help.
Do you get a sharp click each time you turn the key to start.
If so your solenoid is at least flying back, so we must consider
faulty solenoid contacts or a starter motor problem (possibly stuck
brushes). A good few whacks with a block of wood may do wonders.
If it is not clicking then something is preventing the solenoid being
powered. It could be that mains interlock or it could be a
wiring/ignition switch fault.
If you can find the single SMALL terminal on the starter solenoid and
bridge between that and the main starter lead connection from the
battery, the starter should, turn. If it does then its a
switch/wiring fault. If not, its the starter.
All this assumes that the main battery pos & neg are connected and
the starting battery is in fair condition.
