sticky-out bits? ;-)

ROFL! Having been involved in rowing and sculling, I would say that an
eight is about as controllable as a full-length nb (under river
conditions) - the steered turning circle is immense and forward
visibility is poor. They do need to be given plenty of space, but when I
was steering eights I did keep a wary eye out for other traffic, given
that we would come off worst in a collision with a powered boat.
Pair-oars and sculls are much more manoeuvrable, and should be able to
keep out of the way of other craft - heaven only knows what Terry
Streeter's boats were up to (other than possibly laying out a course),
and there should have been someone well upstream to warn oncoming boats
in good time of such an unexpected manoeuvre.
