The external aerial gives a definite improvement.

The connectors to fit the external aerial socket can be hard to find.
When we first got the cards in the office and wanted to connect them up
to the kit in the lab for measurements we gave up trying to buy the
connectors and bought the external aerials to cannibalise for them
instead, you can just cut the cable off the aerial and re-terminate it
with whatever connector your boat aerial uses.
