If you only have 24 hours, I would vote for upstream. If you can get down the lift around or just after lunch time, you should be able to get up through Hunts Lock and Vale Royal Lock before they close at around 4.15pm. There is a wonderfully remote mooring area about half a mile above Vale Royal, but continue up stream for three more miles. The river starts winding and the landscape changes as you pass the salt extraction works. Pass under the two bridges in Winsford and sample Bottom Flash. As others have suggested, it is not very deep, but if you keep over to the right and don't go too far or fast, then you will be alright. Turn around and go back downstream to the remote mooring above Vale Royal (or even moor up on the lock mooring!). The locks re-open around 8.00 am. On your way back down to the lift you could moor up near the swing bridges in Northwich and go ashore for a spot of shopping. Many of the buildings in Northwich are constructed of timber so that they can be jacked up to counteract the effects of the salt mining subsidence. Hunts Lock is 2 miles from Anderton. Vale Royal is 4 miles from Anderton. Winsford Bridges are 7 miles from Anderton. You would only want to go about half a mile further than Winsford Bridges. -- Martin Clark Internet Boaters' Database http://www.boaterweb.co.uk Pennine Waterways Website http://www.penninewaterways.co.uk ------------------------ Yahoo!
