I agree with Mike's comments on this.
Bob didn't say what boat he was on 30 years ago - maybe a shallow
drafted GRP boat?
In my experience the vast majority of canals now have a greater depth
than they had 30 years ago.
A rural mooring in those days frequently involved the deployment
of landing planks - they still do now :-)
