We turned up there at 15:15 on Saturday hoping for a late lunch. But it
was too late, the place was still moderately full with drinking
sophisticates post the 3pm food deadline. The menu looked good (but
expensive) so we repaired to UM for a late lunch and a snooze having
booked a dinner table for 4 at 20:00.
I have visited this venue some years back, I think for a mini gig
involving Phil Irons, Sean and several of the usual subjects but I
could not reconcile the surroundings with my memory of that evening.
Phil - do you remember ?
This is not a canalside pub, neither is it a pre-manufactured digital
eatery. It aspires and I think succeeds at something more grand. It's a
full blown gastro pub with fine ingredients, attentive service and a
somewhat top-end clientele. Certainly true when it comes to the wallet
department. 3 course dinner for two with aperitifs and a bottle of wine
+ coffee is going to be £80+.
We invested £120 for 4 including tip for the young and nubile staff.
This included 2 pints of Deuchars IPA for yours truly, a lonely G & T,
a bottle of Pinot Grigio and a bottle of Rioja. We had only one course
but two of us shared the £35 for 2 speciality of the house - a superb
rib steak with sauce and trimmings. There was also a duck breast dish
for £15 and an omelette for £12.
So for a special occasion it's a good venue. For a swift pint that
works too. But for everyday dining it's too far up the wonga scale for
my personal comfort.
See www.thewoodatrowington.co.uk, although I think prices have already
moved north judging by the price of the house special !
