It won't approach "freezing" but could well be in the range 5 to 15 deg 
C. rain is a probability although you could strike lucky and get some 
clear autumn days.

As Guy already mentioned Napton would give you experience of narrow 
locks. Personally I would consider going up the wide Braunston flight 
and turning left at Norton Jct to the Leicester section of the GU which 
means you would pass both Braunston and Crick tunnels, the narrow 
staircase  at Watford and you could enjoy a typically excellent dinner 
at the Red Lion in Crick.

Certainly feasible on a 2 days out and 2 days back basis. If you are 
not already familiar with it visit Canal Planner AC to determine if 
this trip is within your preferred compass. I would have though 4 or 5 
hours a day would cover it, from fading memory !

Lock 3.
