I picked up a BW Oxford Canal leaflet at Napton which advised that it 
was unsuited to single-handers.

My guess is that it would be possible to make these bridges much safer 
to use without altering the original, simply by providing an anchoring 
point for the chain used to pull down the beam (and a stronger chain if 
necessary) and a bollard and small landing place on the non-towpath 
side.

After all, even people who normally have a crew of two or more may have 
to get the boat back to base single-handed in an emergency.
