We spent two nights in Chester two years ago, with a day trip to
Ellesmere Port in between. The first night we spent above the locks
under the walls, between bridges 123E and 123G I think. In the middle
of the night we had someone walk right along the top of the boat - no
damage done, so presumably just beer-fuelled high jinks - it was a
Friday night. When we woke in the morning we had gained a tub of
flowers. Presumably they had been pinched from a boat further south
but we never found the owners.
The second night we moored below the locks and had no trouble.
Probably the best place to moor if you don't want to go down the
staircase is between bridges 123C and 123E, if you can get in.
