As long as the RYAs main priority continues to be racing, many who might be
interested will be put off for life.
Any young person who expresses an interest in learning to sail will find
themselves bashing about in a tippy racing dinghy.
Power, and it's RIBs (for race rescue boat crew) or more recently "Zapcat"
racing.
At least one person who has gone the "official" route and ended up cold wet
and tired too many times has had their interest rekindled by a trip in our
Drascombe.
Mountains of training, tests, syllabusses and certificates effectively
obfuscate the fact that sailing isn't that difficult, especially if you
start with a reasonably stable boat. Even that's difficult in a world of
over canvassed "class" dinghies designed to go as fast as possible at the
expense of everything else. Proper "Swallows and Amazons" type dinghies are
rare, but even Wayfarers are regarded by most sailing schools as slow,
boring and old fashioned.
