Hireboats are a way of getting children and teenagers in - there were a
lot of families on the Oxford at the start of this week - we talked to a
delightful family on the boat moored next to us at Fenny. They had
previously gone on holiday abroad but had decided to hire a boat and
their children (early primary to pre-teen) were enjoying being able to
work the locks. They had liked their first holiday on the canals so much
that they were asking about whether it was possible to buy an
ex-hireboat of their own.
Maybe Waterscape should make more of the fact that hireboating provides
a holiday in which all the family can be involved together.
