In the video 'Towpath Encounter' about horseboats they reckoned 3
minutes for a lock - but this involved opening the paddles fully as the
boat entered the lock at speed, in order to slow it down. It was fairly
routine in working days to push the gates open - IIRC FNC steamers were
claimed to be able to open the gate against about a foot head of water,
and of course the last few inches are the slowest.
