        Here's my two-penn'orth towars that.

        A real boater -

Knows basically what (s)he's doing but is never too proud to
learn
from somebody else, or to share his/her knowledge with others.

Is quite capable of "getting the boat along" swiftly and
efficiently
but doesn't always feel the need to do so.

Knows how to use spring lines to minimise the movement of the
boat as
others pass, but doesn't often bother, as they actually quite
like
the movement (or why be on a boat?).

Regards a lock queue as an opportunity to make new friends while

sharing the work at the lock.

Tries to be cheerful and considerate to other boaters but
doesn;t get
        upset if they don't reciprocate.

Takes a pragmatic rather than a rule-based approach to such
things as
        closing lock gates.
