If they don't want to help, let them wait! If they say anything about
it, just say it would go a lot faster if they helped! On busy lock
flights its not unusual for us to work several locks ahead -
especially if we have the crew available.

Everyone then gets through faster (including us). We've had some
people so suprised by this that they have wanted to help us back. We
say, just help someone else, and then the work is shared out.

ps. We have followed people leaving gates open, and generally it helps
no one but the boat leaving them open (even if we then left them
open). Unless you are working single handed there is already someone
at the gates (usually putting the paddles down while the boat is
leaving) and so taking a couple of extra seconds closing the gates
doesn't make any difference. Having to walk the length of the lock
however does.
