Now the National Trust. This organisation is on a completely different
scale.

Membership - 3.4 million which alone generates income of £92.7m.

12m visits to paid properties, 50m visits to other NT owned land etc.

Total income of the Trust in 2005/06 was £337.2m.

So EH probably closer to BW than NT.

Though, as you point out, by far the largest proportion of visits to NT
properties are to open country, Wey Navigation etc. sites, BW does not,
and cannot, have the same 'draw to membership as the NT does - the NT
paid properties are mostly enclosed and access is easily limited
(country houses in their estates etc. which were designed for privacy)
whereas even the BW honeypot sites (e.g. Foxton, Anderton etc.) were
designed for easy commercial access. If you don't want to pay to visit
Anderton, you can see it from outside the perimeter, but this is not an
option for most NT sites - a big incentive to become an NT member.
