We went to this museum in the summer and found it very interesting too.

  One thing I don't think anyone's mentioned is the Bygones
  Museum at Claydon, about 15-20 mins walk from the canal.

  It contains a wonderfully quirky selection of exhibits representing a
  seemingly random assortment of dates and subjects. 

  Part of the museum (which is set in what looks like a group of
  farm outbuildings) consists of re-creations of various shops and
  other premises including part of a boatyard workshop which might
  particularly interest people on this list, but what really made it for
  me was the sheer "Gosh I remember we had one of those when I
  was a kid but I'd forgotten all about it" factor of so much of the stuff
  they've got.
