Yes - both the water side (obviously I have been getting the water 
treatment right) and the fire side of the boiler were much better than 
expected. On the fire side, what seems to have been happening is that 
when the burner goes out there is a period of about 15 minutes when the 
unburnt oil in the 'ashpan' sublimates and bathes the tubes, firebox and 
uptake in oily fumes. As the original tubes are of much better steel and 
workmanship than any potential replacements, the longer we can retain 
them the better!

So far as exact timing goes, we are in the lap of the gods (i.e. boiler 
inspector).......
