I'm afraid, Moose, that you're a victim of the biggest political mistake of
the twentieth century - the idea of the "property owning democracy", which
has a history that begins with Harold Macmillan and reaches its peak
(pique?) with Margaret Thatcher. This has led to huge amounts of
unneccessary travel, as everybody wants to own their own home and doesnlt
want the hassle of moving to be near their work. When I grew up (OK Julius
Caesar was running the country at the time) most people wouldn;t have
dreamed of moving their kob without moving their home. When I started work,
that had already been severly dented by the Rent Act of
nineteen-fifty-whenever, but there was sufficient memory of it that it was
much more normal for people to move to be near their new workplace.
Certainly when I was job hunting in the late 1960s, and when I was looking
for job moves during the 70s and 80s, I took it for granted that if I
changed job I'd move house. In my first job I had about half-an-hour's bus
ride to work, or depended on a lift from a colleague. When I moved to my
second job I was determined to (and suceeded in) finding a new home within a
few minutes' walk from work. Then I stayed at the same workplace for a heck
of a long time, and eventually went to a job whose actual job-content
involved travelling all over London, so as my existing home was realatively
central, it was as convenient as anywhere else. If it hadn;t been, I would
have moved again.
