I can't remember the name of the literary construct, but I've seen it illustrated by a description of a soldier coming off the battlefield to receive his gallantry medal after the fighting is over, suddenly realising that his uniform needs pressing. It indicates the contrast in what's important and when. In this case, it was intended to recognise that Andrew can, at last, turn his mind to less vital stuff. Smileys? Good grief, folks.
