In Windoze I always use Alt-xxx or Alt-0xxx (there are two systems - typical 
MS) [that's hold down Alt key while typing the digits on the numpad, with 
the numlock on].  Once you know the codes (they are mainly ASCII for the 
Alt-xxx series), it's a piece of cake.  Two I always remember are degree 
(Alt248 ¡) and e acute (used to work for French company, Alt130  Ž), and the 
old hash # comes up at as Alt035 - also known as a pound in some parts of 
the world.
