To get back on topic, it certainly makes estimating boat weight from
displacement a whole lot easier - work out the volume occupied by the
below waterline bit of the boat and convert to tonnes. Sanity displaces
17.4 tonnes, so every time she enters a lock, 17,400 litres of water
have to leave. Explains why the offside gate tends to swing open when
entering a downhill broad lock!
