Before you get off the Oxford get some old tights and a few wire coat 
hangers, some luncheon meat and some line

Make a lure style fishing contraption with the wire and tights bait it with 
luncheon meat in the middle and find a bridge hole to lower it into the cut. 
The trap needs sides or a suitable sag in the tights to trap your prey.

Some of the finest crustaceans (are they)  will make it onto your trap haul 
it up and you have Crayfish (american?) in abundance. Superb for a paella or 
just a sea food style salad. Seen people there with bread crates swarming 
with them.
