This weekend decided to go cruising:
The plan was to take our boat down to Waltham Abbey, if its warm enough, do a
little painting on the boat. Saturday evening, crew our friends wider than
ours, while he has a party. Sunday carry on with our boat and then back to our
mooring. May even stop at pub on the way back. Lovely
So Saturday morning just about to cast off, to beat our friend to the locks, we
get a phone call from boat yard, Fire Brigade are here, can they come and do
your fire prevention inspection and discuss smoke detector.
After reading the report on Lindy Loo, the burnt out boat? and also having a
near fatality in a boat fire in the boat yard, the offer was made by
Hertfordshire Fire Brigade, so I put our name down.
So now we are the proud owner of a nice smoke detector with a ten year battery
and it was free and fitted.
Straight afterwards started on our way, just leaving feildes weir lock, our
friend turns up with his big boat, so we had only just beat him to the locks.
On the way down towards Broxbourne, lots of fisherman most acknowledge us.
After the next lock phone rings, there is a problem, might be cancelling his
party. Suggested that we stop at the pub at Broxbourne, The Crown, to have a
discussion. After having a chat, pint and some food, chicken BLT well
recommended, party is cancelled, so decide to cruise back up to our marina.
We got back to the marina before they closed, so went upto the water point and
had a chat with the staff, find out that John the young lad, decided to go for
a swim, in the river! not one to laugh at someone elses misforune, but it did
raise a smile or two. The story goes he was taking a gas bottle off a boater,
but he had one leg on the boat and the other leg on the ground and the rope
come untied or loose but the result was he went in, boater from another boat
helped him out.
After this took the boat back to the mooring, approach was brillant, until the
wind took the front of the boat into the bushes on the otherside Doh.
Miles? not many
Locks? 3 there and 3 back
Time? As long as it took
Now for a moan, it was noticed couple of boats had no valid licence's
showing. Also a mooring that states no overnight mooring, a boat has been
there since the end of October! 48 hour visitors mooring is taken by nearly all
tow path shufflers. These are not to be confused with proper continous
cruisers, these say at one point for ages when they are moved on (bit of a joke
there) they move to the next visitors moorings.
It has been know for one boat to stay on the 48 hour mooring for upto three
months!
Oh well still a very pleasant day.
