Oddly enough, in my experience, most really passionate cyclists are either 
ambivalent or 
actively hostile to Sustrans. Serious cyclists tend to be either road-racing 
types or 
mountain bikers. For both groups, the idea of traffic-free trails suitable for 
family cycling 
is anathema - the road-racing types actively object to it, because they think 
that "pushing 
cyclists off the road" will mean worse conditions for those who are choose to 
stay on the 
road.

I think the most likely reason for the Sustrans win is simply that it was the 
only national 
project - and given that the three winners in the £25m stream were all near the 
geographical fringes of the UK (Cornwall, Falkirk, Belfast), there's some 
benefit in 
spreading out the £50m prize.

But then I'm just chuffed that it means the first blockage on the Melton 
Mowbray 
Navigation is going to be removed after ten years of campaigning. :)
