Steve - do a Wikepedia on River Welland and follow on through the River Gwash link, there you will find reference to Oxbow lakes (remember from school - meandering offcuts!) but it says that these are not of the normal expected shape, there's also some interesting stuff about rivers being run in paralell courses so that the area between can function as a flood plain. Perhaps the Environment Agency ought to do some reading on how things were done hundreds of years ago - oh progress! John
