I'm thinking adding a free-standing generator to an existing boat may
be difficult. For instance, I was looking at a wide beam with a
cruiser deck, and though there is space under the deck to either side
of the engine, the only removable panel is directly over the engine.
So it looks like the only way to put a generator in there is to pull
the engine first. Perhaps this is not as big a problem as it seems to
me?
Trad and semi-trads may present even greater problems. (Note: I'm not
an engine room guy.)
